The 7 Best New Jersey Sportsbooks Ranked

Best New Jersey Sportsbooks
Published by NYSB Staff
Last Updated: 23. Dec 2024.

The Best Sportsbooks & Apps Compared

Which New Jersey sportsbook is the best will always depend on your personal needs, preferences, what you value, and which extras you can either take or leave. Sports bettors are ‘sticky’ customers meaning once they find a favorite, they rarely switch.

That challenges the betting industry as each brand has to keep on pushing to acquire newcomers. It also means that the most popular NJ sportsbooks are not necessarily the ‘best’ with all things considered because you need to identify the best for you from this list.

With that being said, our expert team has thoroughly reviewed each of the online sportsbooks available in NJ which has enabled us to identify and rank the best overall options.

BetMGM NJ offers something for everyone and for this reason, is the top choice overall. Those new to sports betting will enjoy BetMGM’s superb app usability and onhand wagering experience. Sharp wagerers benefit from a plethora of markets, promos, boosts, and betting options.

The standouts in its product include BetMGM’s strength in live betting, readily available cashout options on more markets than most, and on-point odds that are always up to date. BetMGM has enough unique features to draw us in too. These take in its multi-sport parlays, free-to-play competitions, rewards program, and the best refer-a-friend scheme out there.

BetMGM NJ is the strongest alternative to those stuck on the state’s ‘big two’ - FanDuel and DraftKings - and that takes some doing. Moreso though, is what you don’t see with BetMGM. That’s its tech core and industry-leading pricing and analytics powerbase. Best of all, BetMGM just keeps getting better.

Another sportsbook rooted in Vegas casinos, Caesars delivers a complete mobile betting product. Had this been a year or two ago, Caesars would have been rated the best sportsbook in New Jersey but it hasn’t quite improved as much as others of late to earn it the number 1 slot.

That said, Caesars is built on a legacy of strong odds, boosts, regular promos, and a great rewards program. All of the above are the key strengths for considering Caesars to be your first-choice betting app.

Caesars is strong and it’s stable. It never disappoints and doesn’t have the ‘getting used to’ factor of some other sportsbooks if you’re considering a switch. With a classic layout that’s not over-themed, it’s so easy to find what you’re looking for in the Caesars sportsbook, and live betting is as smooth as silk.

The biggest sportsbook in the nation, FanDuel is the go-to app for millions of Americans. The sheer size of FanDuel means it packs some punch in all of the most important aspects required of a sportsbook.

If the top American sports are what really interests you, then FanDuel may be all you need. Though lacking the best new customer offer around, there is still value in signing up for FanDuel and it rewards first winning bets rather than losses for a potential double triumph.

FanDuel has a fine-looking app with a user-friendly interface. Rooted in DFS products rather than gaming, FanDuel is one for the sports players. It also means FanDuel has led the way in innovative prop bets with some you typically won’t find elsewhere. FanDuel has also been the big innovator in same game parlays and still holds its own against those who have tagged along after.

The best thing about FanDuel is its impressive trading mechanics making it a leader in odds setting and then keen pricing refreshes.

Fanatics is still getting going in New Jersey but it’s already establishing a strong foothold in the Garden State. Not quite yet a disruptor, still more a challenger, the sportsbook from the global merch giants has a lot going for it. Originally part backed by investment from East Coast favorite Jay-Z, Fanatics is aiming for the sporting stratosphere, including betting.

Highlights of using Fanatics include its great rewards program (get FanCash for making bets), live NFL streaming, and a well-designed, modern-looking, mobile UI. Good betting lines are supplemented by regular promos and extensive market coverage.

ESPN Bet is one of the newer sportsbooks in New Jersey having gone live in November 2023. A partnership between gambling stalwart Penn Entertainment and ESPN, the potential for a sportsbook integrated with one of the planet’s biggest sports broadcasters and content producers is huge. That’s still happening incrementally but already the branding and tie-ins with ESPN’s other platforms are evident.

The best thing about signing up to ESPN Bet NJ just now is the availability of two welcome bonuses and you can claim both. There is a certain familiarity to betting with an ESPN-themed app and the UI is clean, fast-loading, and responsive. Live streaming options are abundant as you’d expect and coverage will delight those who watch lots of sports, supplemented by betting.

BetRivers is an established sportsbook in New Jersey and is a sound choice either as a main option or one to use in rotation. Brought to you by Rush Street Interactive, BetRivers NJ is suitably different from the other betting apps in this list and is a top choice for line shoppers while offering extensive markets and live wagering.

Underscored by odds provider Kambi, once commonplace across US sportsbooks, BetRivers benefits from its lasting relationship with the gambling tech firm in being different in its pricing mechanism to most of NJ’s other sports betting operators.

A clean, standard layout enables newcomers to feel at home instantly on the BetRivers app and there are plenty of ongoing promos beyond the welcome offer along with a tiered rewards scheme (iRush) for extra benefits.

A worldwide giant of sports betting, particularly in Europe, Bet365 has been steadily growing in New Jersey and is now of sufficient volume for Jerseyites who enjoy a wager to take notice. Rising to a podium position for bets taken in the Garden State, Bet365 has built its reputation on live betting and streaming.

A great choice of sign-up bonuses greets new customers to Bet365 NJ and the brand continues to develop innovative promos that can stretch your betting further. Early payout offers are particularly popular as are parlay boosts that can reach 100%.

The Bet365 app has a lot going on which might make it seem a tad too much for novice bettors but it’s very easy to use and those who make wagers regularly on different sports and leagues (there are many) will be delighted.

How We Rate & Review NJ Sportsbooks

Our rundown of the best New Jersey sportsbooks is not just a list. Instead, NJ sports betting platforms are tested, rated, and ranked against the key metrics that matter most using our expert sportsbook review methodology. We also take a state-specific approach to assess the legal sportsbooks operating in a jurisdiction.

New Jersey is arguably the best US state for gambling and one of the most mature with 14 online sports betting sites not to mention 13 licensed retail sportsbooks. As a sport-loving state, New Jersey is home to many top teams so the breadth of a sportsbook’s offering is crucial.

All this means Jerseyans can be choosy as to where they gamble their dollars. To make the top seven, a sportsbook has to be very good.

Finally, we consider sportsbooks that are best for novices, casual bettors, regular bettors, and the sharper variety who are experienced users. We also have to take into account that some people have problems with their gambling and factor in that mobile betting operators must adopt responsible practices with resources and tools to assist them.

Why You Can Trust Us

All of the information you see here is brought to you by sports betting experts. That takes three forms. First, people who are experienced in sports wagering and using sportsbooks. Second, industry observers with years immersed in market trends and developments. Third, a genuine love of all things sports - just like you - and how to make the most of betting but doing so in a safe way.

It’s also important to note that sports betting is big business in New Jersey. By most measures, New Jersey is in the top three states for sports betting activity - in there with New York and Nevada.

Gambling advertising is everywhere so it’s important that you’re able to filter the noise and take an objective view.  Therefore, it’s key that you get to read an independent view and that’s what we provide as described in our editorial guidelines.

Best New Jersey Sportsbooks by Category

Not only have we taken an overall view to select the best sportsbook in New Jersey, but we’ve broken that down further below to rate those who are the top performers in the main categories we apply to rate all online betting platforms.

Best Bonuses & Promotions

Sports betting bonuses and promotions take varied forms but they’re all designed to attract new customers and then retain them, plus reactivate customers whose betting activity has lapsed.

They’re the aims of sportsbooks but they shouldn’t necessarily be yours. Your goal should be to make the most of sports betting promos whether to increase your bankroll, your winnings, your chances of landing a successful wager, or getting something extra. New Jersey bettors are fortunate to be offered plenty of bonuses and promotions.

Best Welcome Bonus

🥇 BetMGM

🥈ESPN BET

🥉Caesars

Overall, BetMGM has the best welcome bonus in New Jersey. It has the highest potential value new customer offer currently available. BetMGM’s opening promo should suit all budgets and any new customer can get something back if their first bet loses (minimum $10).

As one of the newer names in the game, Fanatics also has a generous welcome bonus for new customers in New Jersey that’s well worth a look. Caesars is another of our favourites, with a healthy bonus on offer to help you get started.

Best Customer Promotions

🥇 BetMGM

🥈 Caesars

🥉 FanDuel

A hard one to call as every sportsbook does existing customer promotions differently and what you’ll view as the best depends on what you appreciate, but for our money BetMGM just clinches it here with some great promos on popular games and events, as well as regular bonus contests.

After BetMGM, we value Caesars, and FanDuel most for ongoing promos across the range. If a combination of the bonuses and rewards from that trio aren’t on offer, they probably aren’t worth having.

Bet365 doesn’t really go big on promos as such, but its features like early payout and partial cash out are great if you can make them work for your wagers.

Best Referral Bonus

🥇 BetMGM

🥈 Fanatics

🥉 Caesars

Sportsbook refer-a-friend schemes hand you and a buddy a bonus when they sign up for an account via a referral link you send them. Of the NJ sportsbooks that make our top seven, BetMGM, Caesars, Fanatics, BetRivers, FanDuel have referral schemes. Bet365 and ESPN Bet currently do not.

BetMGM’s refer-a-friend bonus is bigger and better than every other sportsbook’s refer-a-friend program in NJ which makes it our top pick. You can also refer up to 20 friends per month which is more than most other books, helping you to maximize the bonus depending on the size of your contact list.

Fanatics is another generous choice, with funds awarded in FanCash for you and your friend, while the referral bonus at Caesars is also worth taking advantage of.

Don’t forget, you can refer friends from each of the sportsbooks you register with, meaning if you use all the referrals available you and your buddies can access a sizable chunk in bonus funds.

Best Odds

Sports betting odds vary from book to book. Getting the best odds for a wager means you win more money. Relying on one sportsbook to place all of your bets restricts that opportunity. Shopping for the best odds is a much-vaunted strategy but not everyone (even though they know they should) has the time or desire to do so.

A common question asked then, is which NJ sportsbook has the best overall odds? Much depends on what it is you’re betting, the individual oddsmaker strategy at a betting site, and when you’re betting. However, we can offer some broad answers to guide your selections.

Best Overall Odds

🥇 BetMGM & Bet365

🥈 FanDuel

🥉 Caesars

Finding a sportsbook that offers the best odds is important. After all, one of the main reasons we bet is to try and make a profit, right?

BetMGM and Bet365 have consistently ‘fair’ odds across the board, meaning that while you might sometimes find better odds at other books for certain bets, if you pick either of these books you can be confident that you’ll always get decent odds that are amongst the most competitive every time.

If you regularly place futures bets then FanDuel is a good choice as you’ll often find slightly more favourable odds here for those longer term wagers. It’s also often the best for betting the underdog, giving you slightly higher odds that make picking the less favoured team tempting.

The flip side to that is where you’ll find Caesars, which often offers the best odds if you want to back the favorites in a contest. It also regularly has the best prop bet odds in the market. Meanwhile, BetRivers is good for giving a comparison and sometimes finding ‘soft lines’ (i.e. attractive odds that are miscalculated by the book or can be designed to appeal to casual bettors).

Best Enhanced Odds Offers

🥇 Caesars

🥈 BetMGM

🥉 FanDuel

Sportsbooks typically enhance their odds in two ways - profit boosts and odds boosts. The former will lift the winnings you receive by a percentage while the latter ups the price of a specific market and applies to your whole stake. Some betting sites also offer ‘specials’ which are a one-off promotional price for a game.

Best for Payouts

🥇 BetMGM

🥈 FanDuel

🥉 Caesars

Getting your hands on winnings is one of the joys of sports betting. NJ sportsbooks typically quote one to three, or one to five business days to process withdrawals. Some are faster however and often this depends on the banking method you request a payout to.

Typically, as the fastest for withdrawals, BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars, and Fanatics will credit your funds within 24 hours. FanDuel and BetMGM score additional points for having the biggest range of banking methods (and so options to process withdrawals to) in New Jersey.

We found that Caesars and BetMGM are the best sites for odds boots, with Caesars just edging it. However, both offer regular promos to boost the odds on a range of events, including big games.

When it comes to profit boosts, FanDuel takes some beating and can be a good way to maximize your returns. Bet365 is good for big game special ‘Super Boosts’ which while not as regular as the other books are often amongst the best when they’re available. Meanwhile ESPN BET is proving to be attractive for props boosts and is well worth a look for those less regular bets.

Best for User Experience

🥇 BetMGM

🥈 Caesars

🥉 FanDuel

User experience is the single most important factor for enjoying using a betting app without glitches, crashes, and outright frustration. User experience is also a tricky measure to quantify as at the end of the day it comes down to the experience of each user (obvs) but that can be subjective.

In our testing we found that overall, BetMGM was the most well-rounded, versatile, and playable app to use. However, we also thought that Caesars was the most straightforward platform to bet with and will never let you down, which could make it the preferred option for new or casual bettors.

For the more experienced betting fans, FanDuel and Bet365 are deep and loaded with features. For the most part they’re generally very easy to use, however you might need to go digging a little deeper for some of the more advanced features and of the two we preferred FanDuel here by a slim margin.

If you’re a fan who likes to wager alongside watching games or keeping up with the day’s play, ESPN BET and Fanatics are enjoyable to bet with as part of your wider sports consumption, with ESPN BET particularly well integrated with the brand’s TV, streaming and news.

All of those mentioned there are stable, fast, and responsive. Also a word for BetRivers whose traditional feel and solid design will appeal to those who have been betting online for years and are looking for something simple and straightforward.

Best Range of Betting Options

Having a deep range of betting options at your fingertips is one aspect of enhancing your sports betting experience. The best sportsbooks in New Jersey have a determination to appeal to the widest audience possible so the depth of their betting menus is fantastic.

Best Choice Of Sports & Betting Markets

🥇 FanDuel

🥈 Bet365

🥉 BetMGM

FanDuel remains top of the shop for the depth of sports and volume of bet types on offer, particularly those most loved in the US. This means that for betting on the most popular sports in NJ, you’ll probably find a slightly wider range of options here.

Bet365 has a big catalog of big (to smaller) sports and other events from around the world with sufficient betting options to match. While it’s certainly no slouch for the bigger sports, it really comes into its own when you want to get into more niche sports, or explore leagues and competitions from other countries.

We were also impressed with BetMGM, which sits somewhere in the middle of those two. While it doesn’t offer the biggest range of options in any one market, it has sufficient breadth and depth to mean that the vast majority of betters will be able to find what they’re looking for on almost every occasion.

Best Range Of Bet Types

🥇 FanDuel

🥈 BetRivers

🥉 ESPN BET

Until fairly recently, Americans have been steadfast in their devotion to the main bet types - moneylines, spreads, and totals. All top sportsbooks offer these as standard. The breadth of betting options is expanding rapidly though with some standout features among the sportsbooks in New Jersey.

All of the NJ sportsbooks that make our top seven are excellent for moneylines, point spreads, and over/under as their core product and there isn’t really much to choose from here between any of the top betting sites in our list.

While the betting options are very closely aligned between sportsbook brands, you might find better odds for bets like parlays, one game parlays, and secondary and prop markets at FanDuel, BetRivers, and ESPN BET if you look closely and compare at all times.

Best For Live Betting

🥇 BetMGM

🥈 Caesars

🥉 Bet365

Betting when a game is in progress is enormous now. Jersey state residents can wager via cell phones on their favorite teams when they’re in action at the MetLife Stadium, Prudential Center, Red Bull Arena, any number of sports bars in the area, or from the comfort of their own home watching the big game. The best NJ sportsbooks for live betting cater to this demand brilliantly.

In our testing we found that BetMGM delivered a comprehensive live betting experience that felt fun, refreshed seamlessly, and delivered good in-play odds. It’s pretty much everything you could want from a live sports betting app, including live streaming across a range of sports and games.

Caesars is another excellent choice for in-play betting too. Plus it has live NFL streaming, which might make it the favorite if you're a football fan. Bet365 is a top choice for a wider selection of sports with accompanying in-action wagering.

Best For Prop Bets

🥇 FanDuel

🥈 BetMGM

🥉 Caesars

Prop bets are side wagers that depend on the outcome of a specific occurrence in a game rather than the final outcome. Prop bets can relate to player performance, game events, and team achievements.

FanDuel takes the crown for the best prop bets sportsbook in New Jersey. With an extensive selection, particularly for NFL and MLB games, FanDuel’s odds for player and game props take some beating.

However, other sportsbooks have been closing the gap recently, and BetMGM and Caesars in particular also offer some great options for prop bets. They both have an extensive range of wagers to choose from covering all the most popular sports, and are generally easy to find and use via the app or website.

Another sportsbook that’s worth a look here is BetRivers. While the range of prop bets isn’t as large, it often has more possibilities for finding an edge on prop markets than many other sportsbooks.

Best for Parlays

🥇 FanDuel

🥈 ESPN BET

🥉 BetMGM

Parlays are combination wagers with more than one outcome combined for higher odds at a higher risk. Outcomes can come from different events or just one (aka same game parlays). Some sportsbooks like BetMGM allow you to build a parlay from multiple sports types.

FanDuel has led the way for years and is the most popular same game parlay betting site in the nation. Parlay promos are frequent at FanDuel along with boosts.

ESPN Bet is proving to be an excellent choice for sports fans who occasionally bet parlays, particularly those slanted towards multi-leg wagers with several favorites. Look out for their parlay bonus bet and insurance promos.

Best for Rewards & Loyalty Programs

🥇 Fanatics

🥈 BetMGM

🥉 Caesars

Most sportsbooks offer rewards schemes and loyalty programs that give something back in return for making wagers. Some are far better than the rest though.

Fanatics outshines the rest for its FanCash rewards program that appeals directly to sports fans. No other sportsbook hands you the chance to get a Philly Eagles jersey for making wagers for example.

If merch isn’t your thing and you’re more about experiences, BetMGM has the best loyalty program linked to wagering that offers entertainment perks and discounts, closely followed by Caesars. You can also pick up bonus bets using both.

Best for Customer Support

🥇 FanDuel

🥈 BetMGM

🥉 Caesars

You’ll rarely need a sportsbook’s customer service options until you encounter an issue or something goes wrong. All of our top New Jersey sportsbooks have help and FAQ resources along with live chat, email, and phone options. There are a couple of standouts though.

BetMGM has New Jersey-specific options for getting in touch with their support team so they can offer tailored advice more quickly. They’re responsive and we never had an issue having queries dealt with in an acceptable time frame. Caesars also scored well here in our testing, with plenty of information available and responsive customer service.

Overall though, FanDuel has the most responsive customer service chat and in-app messaging support in NJ thanks to its extensive assistance resources, which makes it our top pick here.

Complete List of All 14 Legal New Jersey Sportsbooks

New Jersey is absolutely buzzing with sporting action and as a result, there’s no state quite like it for legal sports betting options - Nevada included.

NJ sportsbooks are required to partner with a land-based casino. That means there are lots of retail sportsbooks in the state catering to those who enjoy in-person betting.

How to Start Betting in NJ

1. Select a Sportsbook

Selecting a sportsbook requires a little careful thought. First off, always choose a legal betting operator that’s licensed in New Jersey. There’s a lot to be said for the reassurance of using a book that has to adhere to state and national regulations.

Take a look at a selection of reviews both from experts and customers and contrast the opinions therein with what it is you personally are looking for from a sportsbook. Ask yourself which betting app best covers the sports you like most and the bet types you’ll be making. Take into account views on the all-important user experience, plus other factors to enjoy friction-free wagering like banking options and customer service.

Then, consider which sportsbook's welcome offer appeals to you most and what kind of ongoing betting promos will best reward how you bet. Remember, you can have more than one sportsbook account in New Jersey so you can make the most of what’s on offer across the Garden State’s best.

2. Register Online

Registering a sportsbook account should always be quick and easy. Download the sports betting app you want to sign up with and you can never miss the ‘register’ link on any of them. Alternatively, some (but not all) top sportsbooks have desktop and mobile web platforms.

To ensure your account is accepted by a sports betting provider you’ll need some personal and identification details to hand. This will include your address, contact details, and Social Security Number. You will need to upload copies of ID documents at some point in your user journey and always before you make a first withdrawal.

3. Deposit and Claim Bonus

Once you’ve opened a new account with a sportsbook the next step is to make a deposit and then you can place a bet. The best sportsbooks in New Jersey accept a range of deposit methods including card payments, bank transfers, and ePayments. Funds will almost always be available immediately once your transaction has been processed.

If you’re eligible for a bonus, you can claim them at this stage. Some sportsbook bonuses require the entry of a New Jersey sports betting promo code and some are applied automatically once your deposit is successful.

If you’re registering for a sportsbook that asks for a promo code, don’t forget to enter it here to ensure that you receive your bonus.

Popular Sports to Bet On In New Jersey

Sport plays a huge part in the lives of many in New Jersey. Pop down to a sports bar in Hoboken and ask the question, ‘Football or baseball, which is the most popular in New Jersey?’, and you’ll probably get into a heated debate.

Before long, someone will be along to tell you it’s actually basketball, soccer, or hockey though. Soon after, someone will inform the crowd that their favorite sport is golf, tennis, boxing, NASCA, or MMA. They’re the genres that most New Jersyens bet on and the biggest for NJ sportsbooks.

🏈 Best NJ Sportsbooks for NFL Betting

1. Caesars

Caesars is the only sportsbook in NJ with NFL streaming and has a top-notch football betting menu to go with it. Officially partnered with the NFL, Caesars has some great football promos, particularly odds boosts.

2. BetMGM

BetMGM utilizes NFL data feeds as part of its partnership with the league to supplement its extensive football coverage. In recent years this has included arguably the best Super Bowl betting of any sportsbook.

3. FanDuel

Football is an enormous part of the nation’s biggest sportsbook and with its DFS football offering, it’s something of a one-stop shop for NFL gaming and betting. The New York-based giant goes big for East Coast teams too.

🏀 Best NJ Sportsbooks for NBA Betting

1. BetMGM

2. FanDuel

FanDuel’s easy-to-navigate interface makes betting on super fast NBA games super easy. There’s a whole lot going on beneath the serene surface too with impressive basketball betting depth. Odds are excellent across the court at FanDuel.

3. BetRivers

BetRivers is worth checking out for its ‘fun’ prop and special bets for the NBA. BetRivers has NBA betting offers you won’t find anywhere else.

⚾ Best NJ Sportsbooks for MLB Betting

2. Caesars

New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils are the only team to bear the name of the state. Housed at the Prudential Center, the Devils set the beat for a region of hockey lovers. New York Giants & New York Jets

In the NFL, Jerseyites have two top teams to choose from located in the state. The New York Giants and New York Jets both play at the Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford. There’s also a hardcore fanbase of the Philadelphia Eagles mainly in the south of New Jersey. The Giants and Eagles are partnered with DraftKings while the Jets have agreements with FanDuel and MGM.

Sportsbooks to Avoid

Often called offshore sportsbooks because they’re based outside of the USA, Bovada and BetOnline are two such examples that aren't legal in New Jersey.

Such sportsbooks aren’t regulated by New Jersey State and don’t afford any protection for your money and personal details. Our top-rated sportsbooks listed at the top of the page are your best choice as they’re fully legal and licensed to operate in New Jersey.

Not only do they offer a superior experience, but being licensed means that they have to meet rigorous rules including fairness, transparency, and security.

Before You Start Betting in NJ

Bet Responsibly

Gambling is now more accessible than ever. Though betting should be a form of entertainment, with the abundance of options available in New Jersey comes the risk of trouble. NJ is one of the states with the highest level of problem gamblers in the nation and that’s an issue recognized by lawmakers.

The New Jersey Casino Control Commission and the Division of Gaming Enforcement are the two bodies that oversee licensing and regulatory enforcement. This includes a state-wide self-exclusion register, advertising rules, and a set of best-practice responsible gambling guidelines to be implemented by operators.

Whether you’re starting your sports betting journey, place bets regularly, or have some concerns about your own wagering habits, it’s important to take steps to gamble responsibly at all times.

These include:

  • Setting firm deposits and spending limits. Monitor how much you wager and never gamble more than you can afford to lose. All of the legal NJ sportsbooks allow you to set limits on your account.

  • Be aware of how much time you spend betting online or in person. Take breaks to prevent gambling from becoming a habit. NJ betting operators enable you to implement restrictions on the time you spend on their apps. Consider ‘cooling-off’ controls or self-exclusion which will prevent you from gambling with all casinos and sportsbooks in New Jersey.

  • Be aware of emotions linked to gambling. Treat the happy feeling of a win as only a treat but consider losing bets to be just that and don’t chase losses.

  • Don’t be afraid to speak with others about problem gambling and seek help. There is no shame in this.

There are resources and help readily available for gambling concerns in the State of New Jersey. Good places to start are the Council on Compulsive Gambling in New Jersey and the National Council on Problem Gambling.

How Betting In New Jersey Compares To New York

When mobile sports betting was legalized in New York in 2022, the pastime of people crossing from the Empire State into New Jersey to gamble legally ended somewhat. That had happened for years but particularly when betting was opened up to competition in New Jersey in 2018. However, plenty still move between the two states and will notice the difference in approach between the pair.

At 51%, legal sportsbooks in New York face the highest tax rate in the US. New Jersey’s is set at 13.5% on Gross Gaming Revenue. New Jersey tax receipts from gambling are primarily used for programs providing assistance to seniors while New York’s are mainly invested in education.

Both states share many of the same betting providers so you can use certain sportsbook accounts in either, such as BetMGM which allows you to switch depending on where you’re currently located.

Overall, New Jersey has more choices in betting apps and retail sportsbooks than New York. It’s a healthy competitive environment for sports bettors in each state though and ensures top promos and keen odds across the two given the closeness in geography and shared love of certain teams.

Online Casinos in NJ & NY

Brick-and-mortar casinos are legal in New Jersey and New York. Rather than travel upstate in New York (traditionally home to NY casinos) many residents there have made the short trip through the Lincoln Tunnel to Atlantic City. That will likely change with the development of new casinos in NYC, Long Island, and the northern suburbs.

There are 30 or so legal online casinos in New Jersey but they’re not currently legal in New York. Many of the best sportsbooks in New Jersey, including Caesars, BetMGM, FanDuel, and Fanatics also have internet casino gameplay. You can’t use any of them in New York just yet though due to legal restrictions and geolocation. For fans of casino games based in New York, social casinos are legal and available to play right now.

However, real money online casinos in New York are expected to become legal very soon. At NYSafeBets we’ll be sure to provide you with expert unbiased reviews and details of all the best casino bonuses as soon as they become available.
